Marquez Signs Off With Valencia Win

Marc Marquez completed his 2014 MotoGP title-winning campaign in Valencia with victory number 13 in a stunning season, taking the record for the most number of wins in a season that Mick Doohan had set back in 1997.

The Spaniard came from 5th on the grid to pass Valentino Rossi and Andrea Iannone and never looked back, though there were moments of slight nerves for the champion when light showers afflicted the Ricardo Torno circuit. Rossi hung on to take 2nd place and the runner-up spot in the title race ahead of 3rd place finisher Dani Pedrosa. Jorge Lorenzo lost any chance of challenging his Yamaha team-mate for honours when he made a fatal mistake and switched to a wet-weather setup bike during the second rainfall, but retired from 20th position when it became clear points were no longer on the cards.

Randy de Puniet couldn’t make the distance on his return for the new Suzuki team and also retired, with Yonny Hernandez citing a lack of front tyre pressure for his demise.
