Valentino Rossi took his first pole position since 2010 in the final round of the 2014 MotoGP season at Valencia on Saturday in qualifying.
The Italian displaced compatriot Andrea Iannone who had sat atop the times for most of the session and looked to be set to take his and Pramac’s first pole position in the category, but in the end had to settle for 2nd ahead of Repsol Honda man Dani Pedrosa.
Reigning champion Marc Marquez crashed out after setting the fastest first sector time and will start 5th behind the second Yamaha of Jorge Lorenzo. Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith follow line-astern for Tech 3, with the Ducati duo of Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso 8th and 9th.
Rossi’s pole was the first for the Italian since the 2010 French Grand Prix at Le Mans and was the 50th of his career so far.
