Lewis Hamilton was fastest again in final practice for the Russian Grand Prix ahead of qualifying, despite spinning and destroying a set of tyres at the end of the session.
Valtteri Bottas was the closest challenger for Williams, only just bested for 2nd place by the other Mercedes of Germany’s Nico Rosberg.
Daniel Ricciardo gave Red Bull some cheer on a difficult weekend thus far by coming in 4th, ahead of Felipe Massa, Daniil Kvyat and Kimi Raikkonen. McLaren had a challenging morning; after starring as Mercedes’ closest rivals on Friday they managed to lose over a second overnight, with Jenson Button struggling to 11th and Kevin Magnussen missing most of the session after a spectacular save when his gearbox failed on the fast and long turn three. The incident instantly meant a five-place grid penalty for the Dane, following Nico Hulkenberg who also had a gearbox change after Suzuka last weekend.
Pastor Maldonado missed out too when electrical ERS problems afflicted his blighted Lotus and left him in the pit garage.
