Rosberg’s Suzuka Shot

Nico Rosberg bested Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, outgunning the Englishman and world championship leader to the tune of a relatively huge 0.2 seconds.

Hamilton had the upper hand for most of the weekend, but the German hit back after the Briton crashed in final practice.

Valtteri Bottas came the closest of anyone to the dominant Silver Arrows – albeit 0.6 down on Rosberg – ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

Daniel Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen made up the top ten.

Qualifying proved a fruitless task however for Lotus, with both Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean failing to escape Q1; the Venezuelan has also to take a ten place grid penalty for an engine change prior to this weekend.
