Le Mans winner and sportscar driver Andre Lotterer will take the place of Kamui Kobayashi driving for Caterham at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The German-born 32 year-old previously served as Jaguar’s test driver in 2002 before making the full-time decision to pursue a career in sports cars.
Caterham’s statement did not make clear exactly why Kobayashi was being sidelined for Spa, nor how long the Japanese driver is expected to remain out the cockpit but did claim he ‘remains an integral part of the team’.
Lotterer meanwhile expressed joy at getting the opportunity to race in F1 – his original dream.
“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to take part in a Formula 1 race weekend. I want to thank Caterham for this chance.
“I’m ready for this challenge and I cannot wait to jump in the car and make the most out of the weekend ahead.”
