Marc Marquez, runaway MotoGP championship leader and reigning world champion, took another step closer to becoming the first rider in history to win eleven consecutive races today by taking pole position for the Czech Grand Prix in Brno.
The Repsol Honda rider weathered a fierce counter attack from Pramac rider Andrea Iannone and Ducati factory man Andrea Dovizioso, beating both men into 2nd and 3rd places on the front row. For Dovizioso, the result means his second front row start in seven days after qualifying 2nd for the last race at Indianapolis in the United States.
There was disappointment for Marquez’s team-mate Dani Pedrosa who could manage no higher than 5th behind Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith, while the factory Yamaha riders were 6th (Lorenzo) and 7th (Rossi). Valentino Rossi was hampered by a finger injury sustained in FP4 when he crashed, requiring stitches to a deep cut on his left hand.
