Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in first free practice ahead of Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg who leads the F1 championship race as the sport prepares for the last race before the summer break.
The session ended with an unusually large spread – over two seconds across the top ten places – and a typical gap of around half a second between team-mates with the exception of the Mercedes duo and the Force India pair of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. Kimi Raikkonen was best of the rest behind the Mercedes, 0.4 ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel was 5th and 0.5 ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull in 8th, with Kevin Magnussen 6th and 0.4 ahead of Jenson Button’s McLaren in 9th.
Max Chilton’s session was interrupted by a gearbox oil spill on his installation lap that required attention and left him in the garage until the last five minutes of the morning, while Adrian Sutil suffered on on-track spin that was the only major yellow flag incident.
Most teams struggled with overheating rear tyres, Ferrari and McLaren suffering particularly badly in the Hungarian heat.
