Nico Rosberg reasserted himself over team-mate Lewis Hamilton in final practice ahead of the German Grand Prix, putting the Briton firmly in the shade by over half a second as Hamilton again made mistakes during vital qualifying practice runs.
Temperatures had reached extraordinary levels on Friday – 58’c – and continued to remain high this morning causing severe tyre graining problems for many teams, though Force India were heard to be encouraging their drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez to generate more heat in their Pirelli’s. This was in stark contrast to others like McLaren, who struggled massively with excessive degradation and were over a second a lap slower than their midfield rivals in long-run trim.
Behind the obligatory Mercedes 1-2, Ferrari and Red Bull were joined in their tussle for best-of-the-rest by Williams, Alonso remaining fastest out of the group and just 0.003 off Hamilton with Felipe Massa a couple of tenths further back in 4th.
More oil pressure problems hit Kimi Raikkonen’s attempts to prepare for qualifying, while there were difficulties for Marussia’s Max Chilton meaning he only managed seven laps in the hour long session.
Qualifying is at 13:00 GMT
