Massa Sets Silverstone Test Day One Pace

Williams driver Felipe Massa was the fastest man on the opening day of the final in-season test at Silverstone on Tuesday, clocking a 1:35:242 lap that put him clear of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo by just 0.008 seconds.

Championship leader Nico Rosberg was 3rd fastest of the day, while some unfamiliar faces graced the cockpits of other cars. Stoffel Vandoorne was in action for McLaren, Pedro de la Rosa filled in at Ferrari for the battered Kimi Raikkonen and Will Stevens took the wheel of the unfancied Caterham. De la Rosa’s work involved running the prototype tyres Pirelli plan to introduce for next season.

Jules Bianchi racked up the most laps of anyone, amassing 97 before the conclusion of the day’s running.

There were minor incidents for Jean Eric Vergne, who stopped on track twice with power unit gremlins hitting his STR9, while Bianchi survived a minor fire on his Marussia car toward the end of the day.
