Nico Rosberg drew first blood at Silverstone in first practice ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix, beating team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the top spot by over half a second to be the best of the Mercedes duo. Fernando Alonso was 3rd for Ferrari, but was only 0.1 off Hamilton.
Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button were the next names on the list as they worked through their Friday programs of testing in preparation for arguably the largest race of the season.
Susie Wolff enjoyed widespread support from the crowd on her free practice debut, but it turned sour when her Williams broke down with an engine and oil pressure failure only ten minutes in; things rapidly got worse for the team when Felipe Massa crunched his car into the walls on the outside of Stowe corner after running wide mere minutes after Wolff had evacuated her FW34.
There was also trouble for Marcus Ericsson, who beached his Caterham at Becketts after spinning on the entry into the tight and fast complex.
