Rossi Heads Wet FP3, But Espargaro Is Still King – Assen FP3

Free practice three proved a washout for the MotoGP circus at Assen on Friday morning, after the weather played its part in proceedings to blunt further progress by the teams and riders. The ever-popular Valentino Rossi headed the timesheets, but with no improvements in lap time Aleix Espargaro will enter this afternoon’s qualifying as the fastest man after his exploits in FP2 yesterday netted him a 1:33:653 lap time.

Rain hit the circuit at the start of the session, leaving everyone marooned in their pit garages until with fifteen minutes to go, when an easing of the conditions allowed a handful of riders to bolt on slick tyres and head for the track. However, there were no improvements on Thursday’s times and so the same top ten from FP2 head through to qualifying two later this afternoon, with the unfortunates – including Alvaro Bautista and Cal Crutchlow once again – forced to contest Q1. The only rider to make a mistake was Pol Espargaro, who survived a hairy moment skating through the gravel trap and across the circuit at a right angle in the dying moments of the morning.

The lack of track time has meant FP4, only thirty minutes long, becomes vitally important for rider’s set-up time before qualifying.
