No Reprieve For Perez

Sergio Perez will take the five place grid penalty awarded to him by stewards in Canada a fortnight ago after an appeal against the ruling failed yesterday afternoon.

Perez was involved in a crash with Williams driver Felipe Massa at the start of the final lap of the Canadian Grand Prix as the pair tussled over 4th place, the incident leaving both men in the wall and without vital points.

Since then the war of words between the Mexican and his Brazilian counterpart has grown increasingly hostile, with each refusing to accept blame for what was the largest smash in recent F1 history.

In the end stewards reviewing the case in Austria on Friday decided the Force India man had ‘moved illegally to defend his racing line in the braking zone for turn one’, thus being at fault for the crash, and will as a result start from five places further down on the Austrian Grand Prix grid than he qualifies.
