Valtteri Bottas edged out Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in final practice ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, after the Briton made changes that allowed him to fractionally move ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg – who ended the session 5th behind the second Williams of Felipe Massa and the Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat who improved markedly on the super-soft tyres.
Fernando Alonso was best of the rest for Ferrari and was only just over 0.1 seconds down, with 0.15 covering the top six runners in the tightest practice session of the season.
Daniel Ricciardo was 7th for Red Bull but was 0.5 down after all the drivers had trialled low fuel runs with Pirelli’s super-soft tyre compound, ahead of McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen. Jenson Button was out of luck again in the other MP4/29, when a brake-by-wire failure resulted in a minor fire in the pitlane before further problems were discovered, putting the Englishman well and truly on the back foot for qualifying after he failed to sample the super-soft tyres.
Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel made up the top ten, both men down on their team-mates and continuing to wrestle with the 2014 regulations.
Qualifying is at 13:00GMT
