Stefan Bradl sprung a last-gasp charge during FP3 for Sunday’s Catalunyan MotoGP to take the fastest time away from championship leader Marc Marquez, ensuring the German heads into qualifying as best man at the end of a fraught practice session.
Marquez sat top for most of the session, though there were few improvements on Friday times from most riders until about halfway through when Yamaha began to push following a fall from grace; Lorenzo and Rossi were sitting on the Q1 ‘bubble’ but their move triggered a rush of fastest laps that kept everyone guessing until the chequered flag fell.
Ducati had shown improved pace from Friday but it soon began to fade in the face of the onslaught, and despite Andrea Dovizioso making the cut Cal Crutchlow has to endure Q1 after ending up 12th fastest. He was joined there by Alvaro Bautista who also missed out for the fourth time in seven races this year, and Andrea Iannone who for once was outpaced by Pramac team-mate Yonny Hernandez. The Colombian made it safely through into the top ten and will contest Q2 later today, despite riding the 2013 Ducati which was widely regarded as inferior to the 2014 machinery ridden by the factory riders and Iannone.
Qualifying is at 13:10 GMT.
