Marquez In The Driving Seat Again – Friday In Mugello

Marc Marquez stayed at the head of the timesheets on the first day of MotoGP practice at the Mugello circuit in Tuscany, Italy, after rain hit FP2 and meant the young Spanish World Champion’s time from the morning remained the fastest of the day.

Marquez pipped Valentino Rossi, the hometown hero, by 0.382 seconds with Andrea Iannone continuing to impress by placing his Pramac Ducati in 3rd. Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha’s Mugello specialist over the last three seasons, couldn’t do better than 6th while Marquez’s team-mate Dani Pedrosa struggled to 11th place, 1.199 down on the Spaniard.

The session was punctuated by big crashes for Pol Espargaro and Alvaro Bautista; both were high-siders but it was the younger Tech 3 man who had the most terrifying accident. He lost control entering the St Donato downhill turn one and took a big blow to the right shoulder before he hit the gravel. His bike was smashed to pieces and ensured a lengthy repair job for his mechanics while Espargaro makes use of his spare bike for the time being.

FP2 was hit by rain that eased ever so slightly toward the finish, with Micheli Pirro stealing the rather inconsequential headlines by setting fastest time overall in the last minutes. Only Nicky Hayden, Bautista and Hiroshi Aoyama matched his bravery and ventured out, with the conditions keeping the top competitors out the picture.

Ducati had a better Friday at home than they have for a long while, with Andrea Dovizioso being joined by Cal Crutchlow in the top ten for the first time since Qatar. The Englishman continues to suffer from a fractured wrist sustained in Austin when he crashed on the final lap.
