Marussia team boss John Booth has assured fans of the F1 minnows the 9th place delivered by Jules Bianchi in Monaco is not a fluke result and that the Anglo-Russian squad has improved since the start of the season.
Bianchi managed to hold off the theoretically-faster Lotus car of Romain Grosjean in Monaco, albeit on a circuit where defending is notoriously easy to accomplish.
“A lot of this weekend’s clear step stems from the progress we made at the recent Barcelona test.” said Booth. Max Chilton had been fastest on day one of the test thanks to some clever timing in between rain showers.
“We were cautiously optimistic about our performance increment, but we really needed to see it translate into a good race here in Monaco before we could feel too confident.”
The points are the first scored by any of the ‘new’ teams that joined the F1 grid in 2010. Hispania Racing folded at the end of 2012, while Tony Fernandes’ Caterham outfit have yet to feature in the top ten after consistently disappointing results.
” [Thanks]…also to our powertrain partners, Scuderia Ferrari, because together we have all made great progress, particularly since the Barcelona Test.” said Bianchi post-race.
“This gave us the confidence to push and we certainly did that here this weekend.”
