Fernando Alonso was fastest in a rain-affected second free practice session ahead of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, temporarily stalling the remorseless advance of Mercedes whose drivers ended up at either ends of the order with Lewis Hamilton in 2nd and Nico Rosberg down in 20th.
McLaren got a short-lived but welcome tonic as Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen were fastest for most of the session on the intermediate tyres before the track dried out and all teams switched to the dry tyres in a bid to learn something with just minutes left on the clock. It led to a qualifying-style scramble for track space and laptimes that gave back something to spectators who had spent most of the ninety minutes with no on-track action and getting soaked to the skin as a rain storm swept across the principality.
Despite the tricky conditions when drivers eventually did go out, only Marcus Ericsson made a mistake when he slid his Caterham into the barriers at Portier corner just before the tunnel entrance, though he escaped without major damage and was able to continue. Kimi Raikkonen couldn’t carry on after a mechanical problem rendered his F14T immobile early on and out of the running when the track was dry later.
F1 takes a traditional break on Friday’s in Monaco, before on-track action resumes on Saturday morning with FP3 and qualifying.
