Marc Marquez was fastest on Friday during free practice ahead of Sunday’s MotoGP French Grand Prix at the Le Mans circuit, but only just ahead of the Pramac Ducati of Andrea Iannone who stunned rivals by continuing his strong form into this weekend.
Marquez was quickest in the morning session but looked out of sorts at the start of FP2, langushing in 9th after his initial fastest lap was disallowed for exceeding track limits. That was on the harder tyre; on the softer rubber the Spaniard proved decisively faster than key rivals Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, with Italian legend Valentino Rossi struggling to 10th on the timesheets after a stronger morning.
Britain’s Bradley Smith crashed during FP1 but recovered to set 4th fastest time by the end of the afternoon session, while Scott Redding survived a similar spill unscathed and continued to circulate in FP2 on his second back-up bike.
