‘It was okay’ – Chilton on Barcelona Test Day One

Max Chilton has claimed his day in the Marussia MR03 at the first day of the Barcelona test was ‘okay’ after setting fastest time ahead of drivers such as Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen.

Chilton took advantage of drying conditions at the end of the day after rain in the morning to bolt on a set of supersoft Pirelli tyres and set a 1:26:434, a laptime that would have put him 4th on the grid at the Grand Prix on Sunday.

“Generally we’ve had quite a successful day and to end it in P1 is obviously a real bonus.” said Chilton.

“We’ve made steady progress throughout the day and to get the car to such a good place in terms of set-up, and then be able to see just how much we can extract from it, is a really big step from the race on Sunday to what we have achieved today.”

Chilton led the way from Lotus test driver Charles Pic, who in turn outpaced Lewis Hamilton who was 3rd but much more comfortable after claiming he ‘struggled’ during the race on Sunday – which he won.

Giedo van der Garde was 11th and slowest for Sauber but completed the most laps – 86 – while Kamui Kobayashi completed 72 before crashing his Caterham to the disdain of the team’s mechanics.
