Marc Marquez stunned his MotoGP rivals as he stormed to pole position in Austin ahead of tomorrow’s MotoGP race. The reigning World Champion was in imperious form and despite a superhuman effort by team-mate Dani Pedrosa he was unable to get closer than 0.3 to Marquez’s time.
Alvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro were the survivors who advanced from Q1 to Q2, with Espargaro shocking everyone by setting an eventual 4th fastest time to head up row two on the grid. Britain’s Scott Redding came agonisingly close to making the cut but ran into traffic and had to settle for 13th.
In the final session Marquez seemed to turn the screw with every flying lap, although there were several riders who applied pressure particularly through the first sector of the lap; Jorge Lorenzo looked more comfortable than he has done all weekend thus far on the Yamaha, outpacing team-mate Valentino Rossi for the first time. Cal Crutchlow, a close friend of Lorenzo, also turned the tables on his own stablemate and friend Andrea Dovizioso and was the fastest Ducati in 8th, ahead of compatriot Brad Smith for Yamaha Tech 3.
