Maldonado penalised for Gutierrez crash

Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado has been handed a five place grid penalty for flipping the Sauber of Esteban Gutierrez during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Venezuelan was exiting the pits next to the faster Mexican and appeared to misjudge his corner entry speed when the incident occurred; the left front of the E22 poked the Sauber into a flip from which a winded Gutierrez took some time to walk away.

The grid penalty has been supplemented by a three point endorsement for Maldonado’s licence, a new feature introduced for 2014.

Critics have questioned how Daniel Ricciardo could have recieved a greater ten place grid penalty after an unsafe pit release during the Malaysian Grand Prix.
