McLaren to race ‘one-off’ Mobil1 livery in Australia

McLaren announced this morning their new MP4/29 challenger for the 2014 season is to race in a special ‘one-off’ Mobil1 dominated livery at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix to mark twenty years of cooperation between the two companies.

The move is remarkably similar to that adopted by the cash-strapped Brawn GP squad in 2009 as they signed a number of one-off deals with sponsorship partners over the course of the season to top up dwindling funds; this year’s McLaren is noteable for the absence of a major sponsor following the departure of Vodafone at the end of 2013.

The MP4/29 is to be driven by Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen in 2014 and starts the season in positive shape after a solid if unspectacular showing in testing.
