FP1 offered a ray of hope for those wishing to see Red Bull halted in Austin this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas second F1 race.
FP2 shattered the dreams of those foolhardy enough to believe the morning’s disjointed session was a reliable inidcator of the form of the quadruple World Champion as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber locked up a comfortable 1-2 finish for Red Bull, some 0.3 seconds clear of 3rd place man Nico Rosberg.
Despite the disruption to the Friday schedule caused by fog and helicopter problems in FP1, FP2 followed the traditional pattern of qualifying simulations before moving on to race setup work. Red Bull clearly led in both categories, with Mercedes and Lotus vying for ‘best of the rest’ just ahead of Ferrari. Hard tyre laptimes varied from the 1:38 range through to 1:41 as the tyres began to go off.
Marussia’s trying day continued in the afternoon. After Rodolfo Gonzalez hit issues in the morning, Max Chilton span off the track with a few minutes remaining when a catastrophic brake failure ended his day.
