19 year-old Russian GP3 driver Daniil Kvyat has been signed for 2014 by Red Bull ‘B Team’ Toro Rosso in a shock signing that has left several key contenders for the erstwhile-vacant seat in F1 out in the cold.
The Russian will be among the youngest drivers ever to take to a Formula One grid in Melbourne next March, when he will debut alongside current Toro Rosso driver Jean Eric Vergne.
Kvyat tested for the Italian outfit at the Silverstone Young Driver’s Test in July, and team officials cited his performance there as the key decision in his signing process.
Antonio Felix Da Costa, previously seen as the strongest candidate for the seat, is now left without an F1 ride for 2014. Carlos Sainz Jr, son of World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz Sr, is also one of the hopefuls left on the sidelines for another season.
