Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber put Red Bull back on top of their fight with rivals Mercedes in final free practice ahead of qualifying for Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix, out-distancing their opponents by some 0.4 and 0.3 seconds respectively.
The German and his Australian team-mate, who must take a ten-place grid penalty for his earlier rule infringements, found plenty of time on the softer, red-walled Pirelli tyre while Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton spent most of the session tripping over one another. Indeed, the Briton was so caught in the thick of it he believed someone had run into the back of his F1W04 near the end of the morning run.
Lotus and Ferrai continued to sit between 0.5 and 0.8 off the pace in their tussle for 5th-8th places, while McLaren were still struggling to find time on the theoretically faster compound Pirelli’s. Their lack of pace in qualifying trim provided Sauber and Force India with a chance to get close and possibly challenger for the final spots in Q3 this afternoon.
