Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg sandwiched the Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in first practice for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix, proving Mercedes hopes of adding their fourth win of the season is a realistic expectation.
Hamilton and Webber dominated the proceedings for most of the session, separated by just over 0.3 tenths while the rest of the field, headed by Vettel, languished a further half-a-second behind. No drivers tested the softer Pirelli compound available this weekend, with much of that running still to come in FP2.
Rumours sweeping round the paddock as ‘silly-season’ continued in earnest included a potential move by Fernando Alonso to former team McLaren in 2015 to partner Jenson Button, a move that would create Formula One’s most experienced and successful driver line-up. Whether the story holds truth hangs on some ambiguous comments made by Martin Whitmarsh on the Spaniard’s availablilty and contractual future.
