Marc Marquez extended his lead in the MotoGP World Championship today despite victory falling to Jorge Lorenzo in the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.
Marquez failed to keep his advantage from pole position and lost places to both Lorenzo and team mate Dani Pedrosa at the start, falling to 4th when an aborted attack on Pedrosa saw him run wide and fall behind Valentino Rossi. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow ran 5th for most of the race absorbing pressure from Stefan Bradl, but the Honda rider squeezed past the Yamaha machine on the final lap to nick a few extra points.
Marquez enjoyed a late-race battle with Pedrosa over 2nd once he had re-passed Rossi, and the two Repsol Honda men swapped positions three times before Marquez eked out a gap over his team-mate; Lorenzo used the scrap to extend his own margin at the front and ensure his 2nd straight victory.
Bradley Smith finished 11th after running as high as 8th at the start, while Northern Ireland’s Michael Laverty finished in 18th position.
