Nico Rosberg again put team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the shade during FP3 for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, out-pacing his rival by 0.146 of a second for the top spot. Hamilton had put-paid to the claims that he was ‘uncomfortable’ in the car yesterday by sitting at the top of the times for much of the session, until the German re-asserted his authority with a superb lap for the top spot.
It was less successful for one man in particular; Sergio Perez experienced a high-speed scare when Pirelli’s tyre gremlins struck again at Copse corner. The left-rear on his McLaren exploded and forced a short-lived red flag, and things got even worse for the Mexican when he span off at Becketts near the end of the session and retired with another mechanical issue.
Red Bull’s World Champion Sebastian Vettel spent most of the morning lingering down in the bottom third of the field as he experimented with race setups, only to pop in a hot lap that bested team-mate Mark Webber by 0.04 of a second.
Meanwhile Toro Rosso built on their superb Friday showing by comfortably posting competitive times through the whole session, with Ricciardo and Vergne ending 6th and 11th fastest.
Paul Di Resta was frustrated to see his Force India team slip backwards compared to yesterday’s top 6 pace, with the Scot ending up 10th fastest just 2 places ahead of the struggling McLaren of Jenson Button.
Qualifying starts at 13:00 GMT.
