Daniel Ricciardo fired the opening salvo in the bid to replace Mark Webber at Red Bull for 2014 by posting fastest time in the first practice session for Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
However, it was well over an hour before the first competitive time was set after rain continued to fall throughout the morning. McLaren claimed their need to avoid damaging new parts as their reason for not exiting the pits, while Caterham chose to brave the conditions and saw Charles Pic bury his car in the pit straight wall in payment.
James Rossiter could not take part in the session as planned by Force India, with the team electing to let Adrian Sutil sit out the 1hr 30m in the pits rather than the Englishman who was disappointed to miss out on the chance to compete on home turf.
FP2 will start at 14:00GMT and is expected to be drier.
