Nico Rosberg was fastest in this morning’s practice session ahead of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The German headed Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean after the 1hr 30min session came to a close.
Lewis Hamilton couldn’t quite match the pace of team-mate Rosberg, while Felipe Massa’s early speed faded against Fernando Alonso’s efforts later in the session. Pastor Maldonado took advantage of further upgrades for Williams to vault himself into contention with an excellent laptime, while Red Bull once again looked to be measuring themselves in a bid to collect data.
While McLaren introduced their new front wing this weekend, the device has failed to show any significant step forward for the team during the morning; both Jenson Button and Sergio Perez were relatively fast in the first two sectors before losing a further half a second in the final swimming pool section of the track. The resulting time deficit was the difference between 5th/6th place and 8th for Button.
The circuit yet again caught some drivers out as they strived to push for better laptimes, with both Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton taking to the escape road at St Devote, while Adrian Sutil dropped it all together and oh-so-nearly wiped off his Force India’s rear wing on the exit barrier. Button went straight on at the waterfront chicane to avoid a lock-up, while a curious incident involving Felipe Massa and Max Chilton saw the Brazilian sweep across the bows of the young Englishman on his way into the pitlane.
