Australia FP1 – Vettel tops the times

World Champion Sebastian Vettel ended FP1 in Melbourne fastest by just 7 hundredths of a second from the Ferrari of Felipe Massa.

The Brazilian usurped team-mate Fernando Alonso from the runner-up spot despite several off-track moments. Lewis Hamilton was 4th on his Mercedes debut, ahead of Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg. Adrian Sutil was an impressive 8th on his Force India return, but McLaren were struggling and Jenson Button and Sergio Perez were 9th and 11th, 1.2 and 1.3 seconds off the pace respectively.

Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutierrez made underwhelming debut appearances and were some way off the pace of their team-mates down in 15th and 16th, while the two Marussia’s outpaced the Caterham cars of Charles Pic and Giedo Van Der Garde.
