Barcelona take two – Webber fastest

Day one of the final pre-season test began in damp conditions at the Circuit De Catalunya near Barcelona, and it didn’t get any better when the heavens opened just before lunch. By the afternoon the track was dry, and it was Mark Webber who duly put Red Bull at the top of the timesheets for the first time in 2013.

Toro Rosso - looking quick again.

The Australian took full advantage of the drying conditions to blow his competition away; this being testing though means we can read very little into the times exhibited by the drivers today.

Mercedes fielded Lewis Hamilton, the Brit completing a sizeable 113 laps as development work continued on the F1W04 although he was some way off Webber’s time. Jean Eric Vergne was again fast in the Toro Rosso, an encouraging step for the Faenza-based team who really look as though they have made progress on their car. Bottas was 5th for Williams, ahead of the Mclaren of Sergio Perez, who was focusing on race setup work, Gutierrez, Di Resta, Massa (who broke down in the afternoon), Chilton, Pic and Grosjean who didn’t run in the afternoon, the Lotus confined to the garage with technical difficulties.
