Jerez test in numbers – the final stats after day four

The definitive list of fastest overall times from the Jerez test, 5th-8th Feb 2013. Data includes laptimes, laps completed per driver and laps completed per team.

As can be seen from the data, laptimes increased steadily over the first three days before spiking heavily on Friday morning. Felipe Massa made the most of his three days in the cockpit of the F138 to claim the overall top spot, but the surprise time was undoubtedly Force India test driver Jules Bianchi, the Frenchman’s 1:18:175 good enough for 3rd in the final list. Good enough also for a race seat at the team? The dynamics of the Force India test seem to suggest there was an unannounced ‘shoot-out’ at within the team between James Rossiter and Bianchi for the final seat, the two men clocking up 56 and 61 laps respectively. Time will tell which one is to get the drive.

Pedro De La Rosa looks on in dismay as marshals tackle the fire at the rear of his F138. The gearbox was swiftly replaced and Pedro rejoined the running in the afternoon.

Esteban Gutierrez racked up the laps on Thursday and Friday to put Sauber way out in front on the total lap board and his times weren’t too shabby either. Toro Rosso appear to have made a significant step forward from last season, while Marussia and Caterham are still languishing at the bottom of the timesheets.

Mercedes recovered from their diabolical start to the week to climb to 320 laps totalled by Friday, and surprisingly for some Nico Rosberg came out on top in the final analysis. His two-tenths advantage over Hamilton is a sizeable margin given the German was not driving on Friday when track conditions were at their best. Jenson Button’s 1:18:861 on Tuesday is the real benchmark of the week, and a mention must also go out to Felipe Massa and Romain Grosjean who banged in some impressive times on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Williams managed a total of 332 laps with their 2012 FW34 which has now finally been retired for the last time, rookie Valtteri Bottas taking the lions share of the laps for the Grove-based team after a problem forced Pastor Maldonado to miss a large part of Wednesday afternoon’s running.
