The Top 5…F1 hairstyles

Formula One has an all-encompassing image of glamour, especially considering the number of ‘blue riband’ races in locations such as Singapore, Monza and of course Monaco; however, some of these F1 fashionistas have dabbled with certain images that caught the eye for all the wrong reasons. Here we take a look at the strangest five of all time…

5. Lewis Hamilton

Note the violent hairline…

Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed varying fortunes since his F1 debut in 2007 – many of the downs have been included in the bewildering array of hairstyles and facial fuzz that he has experimented with during that time. From strapline beards to taking the drastic choice to shave his head, Hamilton’s follicles have seen it all. Perhaps the most unflattering was this odd look from 2008. Whatever it was, whether it was Mclaren’s strict workforce dress code or Lewis’ ceaseless attempts to integrate himself with the rap community, the inexplicable need to look like a peculiar boiled egg resulted in this ‘receding in my mid-20’s’ hairline. Thankfully it seems he has moved on…maybe it was just a late adolescence identity crisis.

4. Romain Grosjean

It wasn’t just Romain’s driving that shocked in 2009…

Romain Grosjean has reinvented his image on track in 2012 after a disastrous debut in 2009, although there is one aspect of that awful year which will forever haunt the young Frenchman – the truly alarming haircut (or lack of it) that prompted the nickname ‘Spaniel’ to be hastily applied, although ‘Mad Professor’ might have been more apt. Please, judge for yourself, because this one really is quite odd…

3. John Watson

John Watson’s 1983 season was more notable for his incredible beard than his results…

John Watson never became world champion, but remains the most successful Ulsterman ever to have raced in the Formula One arena. Less successful was his ‘bear beard’ that seemed to engulf his face during the 1983 season. Forget the practicalities of wearing a crash helmet; it looked itchy enough on its own and remains the only genuinely manly facial fuzz ever to be seen adorning the mug of an F1 driver.

2. Jacques Villeneuve, David Coulthard and Mika Salo

Not where you’d expect to find three Buddhist monks on their night off…

Three very different men that shared a very similar (peculiar) desire to lose their hair. Since proven to be the result of some no doubt harmless bet, Villeneuve, Coulthard and Salo took on the ‘warrior monk’ image after the Canadian driver’s 1997 title triumph. It didn’t last!

1. Jarno Trulli

Fruit-themed hairstyles have never been in-vogue since…

We’ve all heard (or committed, depending on the number of beers you’ve consumed) of the ‘shaving off an eyebrow’ or ‘waxing a leg’ stunts inflicted upon an erstwhile friend in a moment of rashness…but this one is potentially the most horrifying humiliation ever wrought on an unfortunate victim. Jarno Trulli suffered this weird ‘pineapple’ appearance during the 2004 season which was clearly the product of an incredibly warped mind. What was truly strange was he apparently failed to notice the devastation applied to his hair for almost six months…
